A Guide to Playing 5 Card Draw Poker

Many poker players begin their first game play experience by learning the basics of five card draw, and for good reason: 5 card draw is often consider one of the purest forms of draw poker, with its rich history and simple rules. Some of the earliest poker tournaments were conducted in 5 card draw format after the game was introduced in its modern form along the early Mississippi River card game routines. While the earliest games were of the study variety, incorporation of the poker draw became popular as the game took off in popularity in both Europe and North America. There are recorded amateur games of 5 card draw dating back to the middle of the 19th century, and as new variants such as 7 card stud and Texas Hold’em began to emerge.

Today, 5 card draw remains a purist game, often features as part of mixed cash games, tournament satellites and specialized draw poker tournaments. Considered a stepping stone to more complex poker games, 5 card draw has its own unique structure and strategies as well.

How 5 Card Draw Works

In five card draw, each player is dealt five face-down cards which is followed by a round of initial betting. Betting begins with the player on the button (the dealer to the left of the large blind bet). Where the game begins to differ is after the first round of betting. At that point, each player can discard a given sub-set of their cards, which then produces their final hand which is followed by another round of betting. There are varying rules for the individual five card game, depending on the rules of the particular venue where you’re playing. Some games allow players to only trade in three or four cards during the second round, while other games allow for a complete five card trade in. After the final round of betting, the player with the best five card hand is declared the overall winner.

Optimal 5 Card Draw Strategy

With only two betting rounds, five card draw is more commonly found in home games rather than online or casino play. While the limiting rounds may shorten the game speed, they make for complex strategies which incorporate a variety of strategies and techniques into the process. Understanding the most likely hand combinations can help inform a more effective long run strategy to maximize chances of success in the game. Proper five card strategy requires patience, careful observance and a willingness to change up your strategies.

Since there is only one round of trade ins, draw hands such as flushes and straights are less common, since most players are drawing to three of a king, high card pairs and similar hands. Players commonly semi bluff on draws or bluff a strong starting hand by betting aggressively without trading in any cards. Pay close attention to how many cards your competitors trade in, as well as their expressions upon receiving their new cards – mix up your strategy and approach based upon what you learn from your competitors.
