A Guide to Playing HORSE Poker
A combination of multiple poker games, HORSE includes a cycle of Texas Holdem, Omaha Eight, Razz (low card poker), Seven Card Stud and Steven Card Stud Eight. The game is played with limit betting rounds and some tournaments remove the betting limits to accelerate the pace of play as the final tables approach. HORSE is a featured game at the World series of Poker and is commonly utilized in High Stakes poker to test the full grasp of players at multiple games. Considered a consummate game for poker professionals, HORSE requires an intricate understanding of multiple game methods.
Players who haven’t participated in a combination game should make sure they fully understand the rules before betting. While the games are played in limits, it’s common to see large pots and bets on HORSE tables especially since game play can proceed quickly. The limits in horse games can range from $2/4 tables (where $2 is the small blind) to high limit tables, with the betting limits applying across multiple rounds. Most casinos feature multiple limits of horse for beginning to high stakes players.
The Mechanics of HORSE Poker Play
If you’re only comfortable with one type of HORSE game, it’s advised you play at a lower limit. Game types change after each rotation of the dealer button, so you’ll play up to ten hands of each game before proceeding onto the next. Since you’ll be playing each type of game, it’s important to have a firm grasp on each game play variant. HORSE follows the same basic rules and mechanics of each game individually, although your strategy may depend on saving chips for games you are strongest at. There are both table and tournament variants of the game where you’ll play a combination of each game:
Texas Holdem
The most popular variant of poker which is featured at the Main Event of the World Series (WSOP), Holdem is a round-based game where players build the highest five card hand based upon five community cards and two hole cards. Players can use none, one or both of their hands to build the highest hand at the showdown.
Omaha Eight(Hi-Lo)
Players receive four cards in Omaha and must use at least two of their cards in combination with any three (of five) community cards to build the highest hand. Showdown pots are split between the highest and lowest hands, although lo hands are required to have cards of value between aces (low) and 8s.
Razz Poker
A unique form of poker where the lowest possible hand wins the pot, the game is equivalent to the low portion of Omaha without the hand restrictions. Players with the lowest high card or pair generally win, although bluffing can be common in razz where strategy rules.
Seven Card Stud
A common form of stud poker, players receive cards in succession, some of which are visible to other players. The player with the highest five card hand wins.
Seven Card Stud Eight(Hi-Lo)
The game follows the same mechanics as Seven Card Stud with a split pot for any player with the lowest qualifying low hand (cards below eight qualify.)
