A Guide to Playing Texas Holdem
In recent decades, Texas Holdem has become one of the single most popular poker games, becoming the game of choice for amateur players and tournament professionals. The key benefit of the game is that its rules are simple to learn but its intricate strategy can take decades to master. In order to get started learning or honing your Holdem play, we present the core roles to understand the rhythms of the game.
Texas Holdem Game Structure
A complete game of Holdem features ten players, and the game begins by using a high card to determine who serves as the dealer. In most games, there is a stipulated house dealer, so the dealer position essentially means the player is “on the button” which means he or she is the last to act in a given betting round. The first to act in a round is the “small blind” which is the player just past the dealer who must ante half the amount for the round, followed by the big blind and the remaining players. Being in the last position gives players complete information into the hand, since they can see raises and re-raises from other players.
In the game, players are able to call the ante bet, raise or fold their hand – in limit holdem the bets are structured, while No Limit holdem allows players to increase their bets accordingly. Many games feature maximum re-raising levels, which serve as a “cap” for 3 raises on any given round. Within no limit, players can move “all in” raising the equivalent of their remaining stacks; pot limit games also allow players to raise up to the current bet amount in the pot.
Beginning players often master limit games before moving to no limit poker. If the other players fold, the raising player “wins blind” while the game that reaches the final card is won according to the best possible 5-card hand made from one or both of the player’s hole cards combined with the best community cards. The highest hand in the game is a Royal straight flush, followed by straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, pair and high card.
Texas Holdem Game Play
The game begins win a round of betting before the flop reveals the community cards. At this point, players only see their two hole cards and a round of betting begins. Players can choose to fold, call or raise the bet according to the type of game. The best starting hand is two aces, while the worse is a 2-7 off suited.
The next round of betting begins after the dealer reveals three community cards in the flop. The small blind is the first to act (“under the gun”), and can act after seeing the three community cards. The next round reveals the fourth card (“turn”) and then the fifth and final (“river”) card. The winning hand is determined in a hand showdown, unless all other players fold.
